Thesis Title

Ceramics and identity in the south-east European Iron Age

Ian Armit and Lindsey Büster

This PhD is integrated into a broader European project, Encounters and Transformations in Iron Age Europe (ENTRANS), which focuses on the nature and impact of cultural encounters in the Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age between Mediterranean and temperate European societies. By analysing the contents of ceramic and bronze vessels, this project will aim to understand that impact in both diet and cultural/ritual practices, including funerary practices. Residue analysis of visible and/or absorbed residues will be the main analytical method applied during the project. The results will be compared with the osteoarchaeological and stable isotope analyses that are being conducted by others in the project team.
