The University of Bradford is praised for its staff development

The University of Bradford has been commended for its commitment to supporting staff to engage with professional development and has had five areas of provision accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

HEA accreditation provides educational institutions with the authority to award HEA Fellowships to eligible staff in recognition of their continuing success in teaching and learning support.

Following a recent submission for re-accreditation, the HEA’s Accreditation Panel has confirmed accreditation until August 2018 with no conditions and commended many areas of good practice, describing the University as demonstrating “a clear institutional commitment to supporting staff to engage with professional development.”

Professor Shirley Congdon, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) said: “We are committed to providing high quality opportunities to support our staff to deliver excellent teaching and learning support for our students and I’m extremely proud that we have maintained our HEA accreditation.

“The panel highlighted many areas of good practice and we will continue to work with staff to ensure that these opportunities are available to everyone.”

The submission, led by the Centre for Educational Development, had to demonstrate evidence of the institution’s developing commitment to embedding the UK Professional Standards Framework for Learning and Teaching (UKPSF) and show evidence that staff were fully engaged with the framework.

Dr Sean Walton, Head of the Centre for Educational Development commented: “We are delighted by this highly positive outcome. It confirms the maturity of our provision, our firm grasp of the UKPSF and the team’s commitment to supporting the professional development of colleagues across the University.”

The University offers a variety of routes to  professional recognition as Associate Fellow/Fellow  for early career staff,  including a Postgraduate Certificate of Higher Education Practice, stand-alone modules for Graduate Teaching Assistants/Part-time Lecturers and a distance learning module for collaborative partners. For mid-career staff, the Learning & Teaching Professional Development & Recognition Scheme introduced in 2012, offers professional recognition at all four levels of UKPSF from Associate Fellow through to Principal Fellow.
