MA / PG Diploma in African Peace and Conflict Studies
The JEFCAS taught programme - MA / PG Diploma in African Peace and Conflict Studies degree focuses on the understanding and practice of key political, economic, development and social questions in contemporary Africa. The programme covers the domestic and global context of African development, conflicts and institutional challenges drawing on comparative approaches from the social sciences, along with extensive case study knowledge of African countries. The study of Africa is based on the following core modules:
• Introduction to African Politics
• African Security Studies
• Introduction to Peace Studies
• Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding / International Politics and Security Studies
• Africa Study Visit
The African Study Visit: The aim of this practical module is to provide students with the opportunity to have first-hand experience of conflict-torn, war-affected and post-conflict environment in Africa. The choice of country is decided each year bearing in mind safety and security priorities as well as cost implications for students. The Africa Study Visits have been organized in the following countries: Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
In addition, the Africa MA Programme provides the opportunity for students to broaden and deepen their knowledge in the form of optional modules that exist within the Department of Peace Studies and the Department of Development and Economic Studies.
