Health technologies

Research around health technologies relating to inventions and interventions.

This is a growing area of research with the Digital Health zone and includes work around assistive digital technologies in long term physical, social, and mental health conditions.

We welcome your ideas for research proposals that fit within this cluster. We also have the following projects available:

Available PhD projects

Technology-enabled health care solutions for long-term conditions

Examining, applying and testing and evaluating digital (apps, web platforms, informatics etc.) and technological (audio-visual or mechanical equipment) innovations in health care as these apply to long-term health conditions.

Principal supervisor: Professor Allan Kellehear

‘New’ public health - health promotion, community development, and social ecology

Exploring and testing how these public health approaches address different diseases or injury groups. Also examining and describing the promotion of ‘health and wellbeing’ in different communities or disease groups and assessing their role in prevention and harm-reduction.

Principal supervisor: Professor Allan Kellehear

The use of diagnostic reference levels (DRL's) in the optimisation of patient dose in diagnostic radiology: is there a better way?

DRL's have been used in dose optimisation for around 30 years and their importance is soon to be reinforced in a report of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).
However, their use and interpretation lack a sound statistical basis. There are alternative dose monitoring strategies that could be explored through two PhD students.

Essential attributes: radiological protection/dosimetry and statistical concepts and analytical methods.

Principal supervisor: Scally, Andy

Please use these projects to write your research proposal which will accompany your PhD application.
