Biography

I am currently in post as the Curriculum Development Associate for the Faculty of Social Science. Having worked in the voluntary sector after my PhD I have gained a great deal of hands-on experience working with user and carer empowerment. This has been the impetus for my current research on co-production. This voluntary sector experience is also driving my intention to embed placement activity in all undergraduate programmes across the Faculty, giving students the practical experience in their subject area to enhance their learning and, simultaneously, to benefit the local voluntary and community sector.

Professional History

From 2010-2015 I was the Programme Director of BA Social Inclusion at University of Wales Trinity Saint David. As well as engaging students in debates around social justice and inclusion through critical engagement with social theory and social policy, this degree programme enhanced learning with placement activity  in the local voluntary and statutory sectors. I have also worked in the voluntary and community sector with a particular focus on finding innovative solutions to deeply entrenched social disadvantage. From 2002 – 2007 I was the Project Manager for the Women in Governance Project at Richmond CVS.

This project was aimed at women from under-represented communities, such as women with disabilities and mental health users, to encourage them to take up decision-making roles within their community. The Project was awarded a GoldStar from the Home Office for its innovative approach to enhancing citizenship. I have also worked as a Project Manager at TreeHouse (now known as Ambitious About Autism) on the Parent Participation Project (PPP) aimed at enhancing the involvement of parent carers in the commissioning of services for young people with autism. Funded by the Department of Children, Schools and Families, this required developing good working relationships with local and national politicians to promote awareness of autism. I progressed to became a consultant at TreeHouse and completed an e-book called ‘Shaping Children’s Services Together’ to promote partnership working between local authority professionals and parent carers. 

Research Areas

Curriculum development through student engagement in community activity

Co-production as a means to enhance empowerment of disadvantaged groups, and to promote social inclusion and enhance the sustainability of society. 

Current Projects

The Bradford “Pop-Up University”.  This project aims to engage students from the Faculty of Social Science in the local community. The project will expect students to work collaboratively with local voluntary groups to co-produce innovative activities to help meet the needs of disadvantaged individuals and communities. At the same time this will enhance the student experience and develop employability skills.

Working with ‘Equality Together’ to enhance the engagement of students in the Bradford community. Equality Together is a new Disabled People led organisation for the Bradford District and beyond which aims to tackle and challenge disabling barriers
