Travel Performance

Commuter Travel

Achievements

The following table shows single occupancy car user numbers for staff and students going back to 2003 when we started travel planning:

Group
2003
2007
2009
Staff
 62%  54%  43%
 Students  21%  24%  14%

This has lead to an associated reduction in the carbon footprinting of commuting to 4743 Tonnes CO2 in 2009/10 (roughly 3 times that of business travel)

Targets

SMART Move 1 - 2004-9

Our target for this period was a 2% reduction on the staff and student single occupancy car user rate of 32.1%.  This was easily achieved by 2009 with a drop to 18.9%

SMART Move 2 - 2010-14

The following are our single occupancy car user targets going forward, these are measured using our bi-annual travel surveys:

Group
 2011 2013
2015
 Staff  41%  39%  37%
 Students  13%  12%  11%

Business Travel

Achievements and Targets

2009/10 was the first year we have fully carbon footprinted our business travel use, also retrospectively assessing 2008/9 information also, this resulted in the following:

Year 2008/9
2009/10
Business Travel CO2 (Tonnes)
 1,000 957
 Staff FTE
 1603 1,610
 Tonnes CO2 per FTE
 0.62  0.59

The target is to continue to reduce this figure in 2010/11 through the business travel policy and reducing the need to travel.
