As a new member of staff, you should receive a corporate and local induction.
The induction process starts once an appointment is made. All elements should be completed through to the end of the probationary period and should be consistently applied for all grades of new employees in each area.
The Induction Procedure aims to set out the University’s approach to Induction, outlining the stages of the process and its expectations in ensuring that new employees are provided with a high quality and engaging experience that reflects best practice. Three months after starting at the University, new employees will be invited to complete an induction evaluation questionnaire to provide feedback about their induction experience.
Vice-Chancellor’s Welcome Video
A welcome message for new employees joining the University of Bradford from the Vice-Chancellor, Brian Cantor. The film provides the opportunity for new employees to connect at an early stage with key organisational messages related to the strategic direction of the University. The Vice-Chancellor shares his vision for the University, focusing on its four strategic objectives, and his desire to attract and retain the best employees to enable that vision. The film provides a glimpse of working life at the University and, through a broad mix of internal and external endorsements, showcases how it is a great place to work.
A student production, created in partnership between the University’s Human Resources department and the Working Academy, it is also testimony to the talents of our students.
New staff will receive a link to view the film during the on-boarding process and it will be shown at the University’s Corporate induction event.

New Employee Welcome Pack
The New Employee Welcome Pack provides a range of useful and important information and guidance for new employees to support their initial transition into working life at the University.
New employees will be directed to the Welcome Pack in their appointment / on-boarding confirmation. It is important that the pack is used in conjunction with the Induction Checklist.

New Staff Induction event (inc campus tour)
The purpose of this half-day corporate event is to build on your local induction by providing broader information about the University, its organisation, vision and culture. It also provides the opportunity to network with other new employees from across the University, to find out about staff development and support/welfare opportunities available to you, as well as your role in supporting the student experience. There is also an optional ‘green’ tour of the campus focusing on measures taken to improve its environmental sustainability.
Statutory & Compliance Training
All new employees are required to complete four online modules within the first three months of joining the University. Completion is monitored via the Probationary Review process.

Local induction should provide all the relevant information that new employees need and are able to assimilate without being overwhelmed or being diverted from the essential process of integration into their team. Each new employee should receive a planned programme of induction covering both local (job) and organisational information to make their transition from new employee to effective employee go as smoothly as possible.
The Induction Checklist must be completed for all new employees, including those promoted / transferred as applicable. It is the responsibility of the Line Manager or Supervisor to ensure the checklist is completed within the first two weeks of a new employee’s start/transfer date (HR/Pensions will ensure their relevant sections are completed). Not all items on the checklist will be applicable to every individual role and in these cases the manager can indicate N/A.
The checklist should be used in conjunction with the New Employee Welcome Pack, which contains a range of useful information to support new employees, in addition to other relevant resources.
Guidance for Buddying
Buddies can be a key factor in the success or otherwise of the Induction process. If you are taking up a buddy role to support a new employee, we would strongly advise that you read the guidance for buddying and familiarise yourself with the Induction Procedure, Induction Checklist and Welcome Pack for new employees.
Senior Leader On-boarding
Newly appointed senior leaders in formal leadership roles (e.g. Deans of Faculties, Heads of Academic Units, Directors of Services and Pro, Deputy and Vice Chancellors) will be invited to, and are encouraged to participate in, the following range of opportunities:
- A one-to-one meeting with the Head People & Organisational Development or with the HR Senior Business Partner for the Faculty/Directorate. This is designed to discuss induction needs and explore ways in which the new leader can receive support in settling into their new role.
- An invitation to the University’s half-day Corporate Induction event.
- An induction schedule of key meetings outlined in the Senior Leader On-boarding Checklist.
New Senior Leaders should also receive a personalised induction at Faculty/department level which includes meetings with key employees.
