Biography
Beth Fylan is Professor in Healthcare Systems and Safety and Assistant Director of the National Institute for Health Research Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Research Collaboration (NIHR Yorkshire and Humber PSRC) based at Bradford Institute for Health Research. Beth also leads the Supporting Safe Care in the Home research theme of the PSRC. Beth is an experienced applied health and social researcher. Her research areas include patient safety, medicines optimisation, care transitions, deprescribing, resilient healthcare and implementation of pharmacogenomic testing.Beth has worked extensively in the UK designing and delivering research for national and local government, NHS organisations, charities, and the private sector. Her research has included national evaluations of health-related policy, for example she led the qualitative national evaluation with GPs of the Statement of Fitness for Work for the Department for Work and Pensions. She has also developed and delivered training programmes in research and evaluation methods. Beth is co-supervisor to a number of PhD students at the University of Bradford exploring patient safety, medicines optimisation and pharmacogenomics. As visiting Associate Professor at the University of Leeds, she co-supervises three NIHR PSTRC PhD students working on: the role of pharmacy in deprescribing; uncertainty in emergency admissions decisions; minoritised healthcare workers' experiences of incivility and the potential impact on the safety of patient care. Beth is also academic career development lead for the PSRC.
