The new part-time, distance learning Postgraduate Diploma Clinical Pharmacy (Primary Care) is designed for newly qualified pharmacists. It is the first programme of its kind in the UK.
You’ll develop the clinical and advanced therapeutic skills required to work effectively in a GP practice, enhancing your ability to deliver safe and effective patient-centred care in partnership with multi-disciplinary teams.
The programme covers subjects such as:
- the foundations of primary care practice
- advanced communication
- managing complex patients with co-morbidities
- quality and service improvement
It enables you to:
- effectively work with health and social care providers across the primary care setting
- analyse, interpret and present medicines data to support decision making
- develop and monitor evidence based practice guidelines
- use consultation / communication skills to manage challenging situations
- make independent therapeutic decisions / recommendations
This programme is the first of this kind nationally and will provide training that is refined to local/regional workforce needs, where there are a number of potential models for employment of pharmacists being developed.

English language requirements:
An IELTS score of 7.0 is required in each of the four subsets, in order to align our English language requirements with those of the regulatory body for practising pharmacists, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

This programme provides education and training for early career pharmacists to develop their knowledge and skills whilst working in a GP practice. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team is key to the development of relationships and experience in any clinical setting and the University of Bradford School of Pharmacy & Medical Sciences is well positioned to ensure that multidisciplinary learning and working is at the forefront of the course design due to its close involvement with programmes for other allied health professionals including physician associates, nurses and paramedics.
You will normally complete a 30 credit module each semester and therefore 60 credits per year.
There are four core modules across years 1 and 2 (120 credits). There is however ample opportunity for choice within each module in relation to the nature of patient care plans produced and work based learning assignments as well as the chosen area of competence in prescribing practice.
All modules have been mapped to the RPS Foundation Pharmacist Framework.

Learning activities and assessment
The structure of the modules allows for the integration of theory and learning with clinical practice.
You will have an introductory tutorial on course content, the RPS Foundation Pharmacist Framework (FPF) and how the course content maps to it. This will guide you through mapping yourself against this framework and identifying your personal development plan.
Directed tasks both before and after attending the study days will help you to consolidate your learning and understand its application in the practice setting.
Work based assessments will include pharmaceutical care plans, reflective journals and case based discussions. You will also undertake written assignments and OSCEs in some modules.
Career support and prospects
The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.
Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.
There has been an increasing shift of health services into primary care practice, driven by NHS policy. It has been recognised that pharmacist are a crucial part of the plan to address these increased workforce needs.
This programme is designed to provide education and training for pharmacists so that newly qualified pharmacists are able to work alongside GPs in a variety of roles identified and endorsed by the Royal College of General Practice (RCGP), the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and the Primary Care Pharmacist Association (PCPA) in their document entitled ‘A guide for GPs considering employing a practice pharmacist’.

The School of Pharmacy employs experienced pharmacists working in primary care and has close links with primary care practice to guide you in career choices.
You will have an academic tutor assigned to support you throughout the programme.
You will map yourself against the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Foundation Pharmacy Framework, which will prepare you for application to the RPS Faculty.
The School of Pharmacy has an excellent national and international reputation in practice research. Staff teaching on the programme are active members of the School’s Medicines Optimisation Research Group.
