This programme provides the opportunity for health professionals to obtain a post registration qualification in critical care at Undergraduate level and complements our existing provision at Postgraduate level.

Students will develop their knowledge and skills within critical care and also develop skills as a reflective practitioner as well as the knowledge to apply research evidence in practice.

The core module is Applied Knowledge and Skills for Management of the Critically Ill Patient and one further module can be selected from the group of critical care related module provision.

Why Bradford?

This program has been developed after discussions with the West Yorkshire Adult Critical Care Operational Delivery Network.

It provides the opportunity to gain a post registration award in critical care whilst at the same time working towards completing the relevant national critical care competencies. The program enables you and your employer to work towards recognised national standards or the delivery of critical care services.

Entry requirements

  • A registered qualification with a UK professional regulatory organisation
  • Students for whom English is not a first language must have an IELTS score of 6.5 with no sub test lower than 5.5 or equivalent
  • Have an identified mentor in practice. Full time students who do not have a mentor in practice will be restricted to modules with an 'international' version

Learning activities and assessment

Learning outcomes are mapped against the National Critical Care Competency Framework as well as the relevant KSF domains. A variety of assessment modes are used across the range of modules.

Module information

Applied Knowledge and Skills for the Management of the Critically Ill Adult-Core Module

This module aims to promote and apply specialised knowledge and skills in order to enable effective assessment and planning the care of the critically ill. Students will develop and implement interventions supporting the wellbeing of critically ill adults and their families.

Applied Pathophysiology and Pharmacology in Acute and Long-Term Conditions- Option

This module aims to develop student knowledge and understanding of pathophysiology and pharmacology of acute and long term conditions. This will enable students to gain a greater understanding of underlying disease processes and their pharmacological treatment.

Competency Based Learning in Clinical Practice- Option

This module aims to support learning towards the achievement of national or local competencies, for health professionals practicing in extended roles or within a specified area of practice. Competencies will be negotiated within the student’s clinical area and achievement of these competences will be supported by a clinical supervisor and an academic supervisor.

Adult Cardiology, Examination and Assessment - Option

The module is open to registered nurses and aims to enhance knowledge and skills relating to patient assessment, including ECG interpretation in order to propose and initiate appropriate care and referral.

Prescribing for Healthcare Professionals (40 CREDITS) -Option

This module will prepare nurses, midwives, pharmacists, podiatrists and physiotherapists who have the requisite post registration experience to prescribe as independent and supplementary prescribers and radiographers to prescribe as supplementary prescribers. It will allow experienced non-medical health professionals to enhance their knowledge, and gain critical awareness of contemporary issues in order to become safe, competent and effective prescribers, within current legal and professional guidelines. Also, enable successful students to record their prescribing qualification with the relevant professional body.

Note to undertake this module you will need to be identified as suitable for a prescribing role and supported by your employer.

Career support

This award is a specifically designed programme for registered nurses and other health professionals working in critical care to gain a Certificate in Continuing Education to meet the requirements of NHS England Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive Care Services.

Members of other registered health professions are also and are invited to discuss their development needs with the programme leader.
