Overview

The MEng in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering shares modules with our Mechanical Engineering programme, but focuses on automotive engineering and design. This ensures you’ll graduate as a well-rounded engineer, with a broad range of skills.

The global automotive industry is changing rapidly; you’ll develop the theoretical understanding and hands-on practical experience you need to start a career in the sector, and help shape its future.

Modern automotive engineers combine physics, material science and computational methods to create complex systems that are:

  • economic
  • reliable
  • efficient
  • sustainable

You’ll develop the skills needed to conceive, design, analyse, manufacture and manage the complex mechanical systems that form a part of everyday road vehicles.

On graduation you will be industry ready, with a working knowledge of:

  • the core analytical and scientific principles which underpin mechanical engineering
  • computer-aided design and manufacturing (CADCAM)
  • computer-aided engineering (CAE) techniques

This MEng programme includes a fourth year of study, and fulfils the formal educational requirements required to present yourself for CEng registration. 

Professional Accreditation/Recognition

These courses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and can lead to Chartered Engineer (CEng) accreditation. This course is recognised by ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education).

A levels:

To include A-level Maths.

BTEC Extended Diploma:

Must be an Engineering subject including Further Maths for Engineering Technicians module.

Applicants on Access Programmes:

Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering or Science and Engineering - must contain a minimum of 12 credits in Maths.

Plus minimum of:

GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or 4 (equivalents accepted).

English language requirements:

Minimum IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent.

If you do not meet the IELTS requirement, you can take a University of Bradford pre-sessional English course. See the Language Centre for more details.

Year one develops your core knowledge in Mechanical Engineering.

In year two you begin to specialise in automotive engineering, with 20 credits of specialised study utilising both a theoretical and hands-on approach. To support this, you will also develop specialist knowledge in the fundamental engineering subjects. Laboratory sessions using a vehicle and dynamometer are used to explore theoretical concepts.

In year three your skills and knowledge in automotive engineering will be further advanced with an additional 40 credits of specialised study in which you will use computer aided engineering tools to explore the theories and concepts from your lectures. You will refine your engineering skills and undertake a substantial individual project, often linked with ongoing research activities. Optional modules are used to tailor your study to match your interests and career aspirations.

In your final year you will take 50 credits of automotive analysis based modules focussing on NVH, chassis & driveline and propulsion systems. You will have the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams with engineers from other disciplines on complex engineering problems, whilst also broadening and deepening your skills and knowledge in core engineering topics.

Over the course of your programme of study you will engage in a number of projects. In year one you will undertake a group project to design and build a small electric vehicle which has to carry a payload up a gravel slope. This is a stimulating project which allows you to put in to practice the core knowledge that you have acquired in year one. In year two you design and have manufactured a simple mechanism. This involves a number of critical steps and provides insight into the level of detail and accuracy needed to translate a design concept into a fully functioning product. It presents in miniature the real-world engineering process. In year three, in addition to your individual project, you undertake a group design project using formal design methods developed through our industrial partnerships to solve practical engineering problems.

Learning activities and assessment

Your learning experiences are varied, comprising a mixture of formal lectures, practical lab sessions, tutorials and seminars, and group work.

Independent study is supported by our Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard.

Reading lists and suggested resources for independent study provide you with clear direction, while regular contact hours and informal feedback throughout the programme provide all the support you may need.

Study Abroad

All of our programmes offer the opportunity to study abroad, with one or two semesters at an international partner institution.

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Research

Our research underpins every level of your programme of study. Our Automotive Research and Knowledge Transfer Centre actively collaborates with the automotive industry, giving you the opportunity to work on advanced industry linked projects.

You will be taught by academics who are working at the forefront of their engineering discipline and use these skills to teach engineers in the automotive industry.

This enables us to explore with you how theoretical principles are being applied to solve real world challenges.

Your individual project gives you access to our research facilities and provides you with an opportunity to become involved in much larger research projects being conducted with our industrial partners.
