This three-year full-time degree in Child Nursing leads to a professional nursing qualification and eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

This is a practical, patient-centred course with equal amounts of theory and clinical practice which enables styou to experience different aspects of healthcare. You'll have the opportunity to work within areas such as the new children’s unit and the newly refurbished children’s Accident and Emergency area, as well as community settings in both urban and rural areas.

Children have specific health needs in order to minimise the impact of illness, so require care from dedicated knowledgeable learners to ensure their safety and wellbeing. At Bradford you will provide care to children and families from a range of different backgrounds.

You will be supported in your learning by experienced children’s nursing practitioners who will help you gain skills in nursing in both hospital and community settings.

This course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as the statutory body and regulator of nursing and midwifery healthcare professions.

Why Bradford?

Nursing at Bradford was given 96% overall satisfaction by students in the National Student Survey 2016. We were also ranked number one in the UK for undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery placement satisfaction. 

Spanning the rural Yorkshire Dales to inner city districts, no other area of the UK offers the rich diversity of clinical experience available through the University and our partner Trusts. Bradford also has the highest youth population in the country.

Throughout your studies you will be taught by a team of professional nurses supported by other staff at the Faculty of Health Studies, and have access to a suite of purpose-built practice simulation suites, which allow you to be taught and to practise your core clinical skills, from bed making, moving babies and children and taking blood pressure to giving injections, and dispensing medication, and simulation of the seriously ill baby or child using our interactive models. The clinical wards house a variety of equipment which you would normally find in clinical practice.

Following graduation and registration, nurses are expected to continue to develop their knowledge and skills, and we offer a variety of short courses and postgraduate study options which allow nurses to specialise in particular areas of interest.


Entry requirements

Typical offer: BBB / 120 UCAS points

A levels:

120 UCAS tariff points to include at least two full A-levels. There are no specific subject requirements.

BTEC Extended Diploma:

DDM — there are no specific subject requirements.

Applicants on Access Programmes:

120 UCAS tariff points from an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health Professions, Science or Social Science.

Plus minimum of:

GCSEs with grade C or grade 4, to include English Language, Mathematics, and Biology or Combined Science. Level 2 equivalencies are accepted.

Those applying with an Access course are only required to have GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or grade 4. Level 2 equivalences are accepted in place of GCSE English Language and Mathematics.

Additional entry requirements:

As part of the selection process, we interview short-listed candidates prior to making offers.

All places are offered subject to satisfactory occupational health screening, a second reference and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Evidence of recent relevant study in the last 5 years is required — please contact us for further information.

The occupational health screening

All places are offered subject to satisfactory occupational health screening. This will involve completing an on-line occupational health questionnaire and attendance if required at a medical appointment.

Students on health care programmes must be able to meet the Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Proficiency (2013). Occupational health screening and assessment will consider the students’ health and wellbeing and their fitness to study and practice. Progress on the course is dependent on your continued fitness.

This screening process complies with Public Health England requirements for protection of the public and students and staff working in health and social care.

All offers of places are made subject to satisfactory health clearance and an agreement to undergo appropriate blood tests and immunisations.

The University is obliged to make reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities to enable them to fulfil the required competencies of the programme. Candidates who are concerned about health issues are strongly advised to contact us prior to applying.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

All places are also offered subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (previously known as CRB check) disclosure. This is due to the fact that you may be required to work with children or vulnerable adults on your clinical placement, and will need to demonstrate that you can safely work with these groups upon HCPC registration.

English language requirements:

Minimum of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent (no sub-test lower than 7.0).

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

100% of our 2016 graduates in Nursing (Child) found employment or went on to further study within six months of graduating.*

Most of our students gain employment locally and immediately upon completion.

Students graduating in Children’s nursing will be prepared to provide holistic care to children and their families in a variety of settings.

Study Support

We have a commitment to strong pastoral care for all of our students, which includes a Personal Academic Tutor for all students, regular contact hours for tutor groups and our supportive student service teams who are always ready to help with any questions and provide the advice that you need.

In addition to standard study support through taught sessions, our Virtual Learning Environment allows students to access resources, participate in group work and submit work from anywhere in the world 24/7.

Child Simulation Suite

The Child Simulation Suite is a specialist teaching room, used mainly by Children's nursing students.

This room contains a SimNewB mannequin.

The SimNewB is a computer controlled manikin which replicates a new born baby. It can be programmed to be a limp new-born with no vital signs, or a moving, crying, vigorous new-born, and it has an umbilicus that can be assessed, cut and catheterized for IV access.

The SimNewB manikin has life-like traits, a realistic airway and breathing functions, and will provide nursing students with true to life clinical feedback through its computer system.

“The SimNewB moves, cries and its lips go blue, just like the real thing. Having an accurate anatomical representation of a full-term, female baby enhances the learning experience in terms of patient care."

Within the Child Simulation Suite there are also a number of other manikins and models to practise various clinical skills including:

  • Bathing
  • Bed and cot making
  • Feeding
  • Basic life support
  • Bandaging

There is also a 24/7 video recording system (SMOTS) in the room which can be used to film students and then used to review the findings. The footage can be relayed live to anywhere in the university, and other groups can interact with the students who are working in this room.

Clinical Wards

Our two clinical wards are specifically designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patients' beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.

A wide range of training aids and equipment are available in these rooms including:

  • Catheterisation, intramuscular and enema training aids
  • Skeletons
  • Adult  resuscitation mannequins
  • Electrocardiograph machine
  • Defibrillator
  • Dinamaps electronic blood pressure machine

These practice wards have been developed to allow students to learn the art and science of their chosen profession in a safe and relaxed environment.

Students currently use the wards to learn skills such as:

  • Bed making
  • Bed bathing
  • Eating and drinking
  • Elimination
  • Adult basic life support
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • Observational skills and physiological measurement including, temperature, pulse and blood pressure
  • Urinary catheterisation and catheter care
  • Injection technique
  • Medicine administration
  • Intravenous fluid replacement therapy
  • Asepsis

The second ward has moving and handling equipment with hoists including an overhead hoist and handling aids. There is also a full computer system, audio-visual equipment, a smartboard and SMOTS.

Wet Lab

The wet lab is a teaching room which used for up to 20 students, to teach a range of clinical skills from hand washing in sterile conditions to venepuncture and cannulation on training arms.

Students can also learn how to do a urinalysis test on the most up to date machines. This room is equipped with computer and audio visual equipment as well as a smartboard.

Financial support

From 1 August 2017, new students in England on nursing, midwifery and most allied health professional pre-registration courses, will have access to the standard student support package of tuition fee loans and support for living costs.
