This brand-new BSc (Hons) programme in Virtual and Augmented Reality is one of the first of its kind in the UK.
It sits alongside our established games design, animation, visual effects and film production programmes, and represents the future direction of these industries.
It will give you the technical and creative skills you need to become a professional virtual/augmented/mixed reality artist, equipped to enter a fast growing and incredibly exciting sector.
You’ll learn techniques such as:
- 3D modelling
- motion capture
- digital compositing
- games design and app development
You will develop core creative and technical understanding through research and practitioner informed teaching, and hands-on production projects.
You won't just learn to use the software - you will develop crucial social, industry, artistic, and scientific skills and context.
The industry regularly states that this broad knowledge base is missing in most graduates, and is in great demand - making you highly employable upon graduation.
The BSc (Hons) in Virtual and Augmented Reality is also available as a four-year programme, including a sandwich placement year in industry.

Plus minimum of:

Learning activities and assessment
Most modules use a mixture of formal lectures, practical lab sessions, tutorials and seminars.
Some modules involve supervised group work, usually with an assigned academic staff member for each group.
All modules require students to undertake independent study, supported through distance learning technologies such as our Virtual Learning Environment.
Reading lists and suggested resources for independent study provide further direction for students to undertake this work, and regular contact hours and informal feedback throughout the courses provide opportunities for further guidance for learners.
Assessments for modules mostly take the form of practical coursework, lab tests and written exams, with all forms being well represented throughout all years of the course across all modules
All of our programmes offer the opportunity to study abroad, with two semesters at an international partner institution.
Career support and prospects
The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.
Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.
VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) is becoming increasingly important and visible in the entertainment industries; particularly film and games, real world spaces and apps. It is also set to play an important role in areas such as training (in medical education, for example) and sustainable development. As a graduate you'll be ideally placed to enter a thriving industry, and will be part of the next wave of creative, and technical fusion. As a technically skilled artist in this space, you'll be future proof and able to capitalise on a wide range of opportunities
