Working through change

Change in organisations excites and energises some people and others find it very unsettling and can feel they lack the personal resources to deal with it effectively.

If you are someone who finds it challenging you are not alone but you can do some things to help build your resilience and look after your health and well-being during times of change.

Make sure you have time with your manager to talk about how you can best to work through the change and you may also wish to take some time to look at the resources that are available to draw on to help you. These are detailed below and you can follow the links to find out more details or to book on events.

Personal Resilience e-learning module

The Personal Resilience e-learning module is a short online module accessible to all through your e-learning dashboard that provides you with a general introduction to resilience, and suggests tools and approaches which may be helpful in building your own resilience. You can access this through the normal e-learning portal

A Space to Breathe – mindfulness sessions

"A Space to Breathe – mindfulness session" is a 40 – 45 minute session open to all and run monthly, that provides mindfulness or relaxation practice to help manage stress, improve resilience or just give you the opportunity to find a calm space in your busy working week.

Introduction to Mindfulness

Introduction to Mindfulness is a 2 hour session open to all. This session aims to give you an introduction to mindfulness theory and practice. Regular practice of mindfulness enhances mental and physical stamina and resilience; it also improves working memory, creativity, attention span and reaction speeds.

'How to' Kits

Via the 'How to' Kits, select the resources and guidance option to find a selection of short and easy to use development tools on key topics related to change. Each kit includes a short summary of the topic using helpful models and examples along with hints and tips for success and some activities to try out yourself.

Employee Assistance Programme

The Employee Assistance Programme is a 24/7 telephone helpline staffed by a team of trained practitioners. The service offers confidential, independent and unbiased guidance to all University employees on a whole range of issues which may affect wellbeing, whether work-related or not.  You should have received a personal information card with further details of this service and contact information.  

Sustain Website

The Sustain website is dedicated to your health and wellbeing, full of tools, advice and signposts to other support services both internal and external to the University.

Staff Counselling

The University counselling service provides a range of interventions for staff from one-to-one counselling to monthly mindfulness sessions to help you manage the difficult times both at home and at work. Getting Through Anxious Times

These are anxious times for most people, both at work and in the wider world. Our bodily response can be continuous, nagging anxiety or maybe even panic attacks. There are plenty of simple techniques for reducing your anxiety; this workshop will explore these and help you find ways of using them in your daily life.

By the end of this workshop you will have a toolkit of practical skills and know-how that will help you manage your anxiety, rather than have it manage you.
