Imagine a world without nationality, where you’re free of labels, utterly transient, without ID documents and don’t belong to the ruling order of any country...no recognition that you even exist.
Free to Stay is a new play about belonging and an exploration of life without nationality, inspired by months of research with people who have first-hand experience of statelessness in the UK and overseas.
Using impulsive movement theatre, stunning projection and a powerful soundtrack mixed with personal testimonies, Displace Yourself seek to tell some of the stories of those who feel invisible and ask what community means if you live in a world where everything and everyone is foreign.
Displace Yourself Theatre are an ambitious young devising company that use the power of movement to shine light on the shadows of society. The Socio-Political work is reflected in Displace Yourself’s distinctive form using projection, live performers, minimal props and precise energetic movement scores that disobey traditional theatre conventions. At the heart of their productions lies a thorough and intimate process of devising, working closely with the people that their productions are about, providing a platform for under-represented communities to use theatre as a way to have their voices heard. Involving the audience at all stages of the show’s development through live events, discussions and workshops is as important to Displace Yourself as the show itself.
