Only Expansion is a new artistic experience being developed by Duncan Speakman.
The work takes you on a sonic walk through Bradford, combining the sound of your immediate surroundings with recordings
of distant locations. As you walk, custom mobile technology records the world around and remixes it into new shapes and textures, voices of passers-by become choirs, the squealing brakes of buses become melodies.
The walk is an evocative reflection on how we engage and interact with environments near and far, and the entangled relationships between them.
This project is a continuation of work developed in collaboration with Lydgalleriet in Bergen. It forms part of Speakman’s current PhD research into how sound might offer us new ways of understanding current ecological thinking, exploring recent shifts in our conceived relationships with the natural world.
Duncan Speakman (UK 1976) originally trained as a sound engineer at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Since 2005 he has focused on mobile audio and locative media, creating socially relevant experiences that engage audiences emotionally and physically in uncontrolled spaces. From 2010-2016 he was director of the arts collective [Circumstance], regularly presenting work internationally including [sound installations on trains] in Guangzhou, [loudspeaker symphonies] in New Zealand, audio walks in [Saitama] and [performances] in Porto. Recently he has developed a number of [hybrid print and audio] experiences such as [It Must Have Been Dark By Then]. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of the West Of England, researching compositional approaches to mobile sound led experiences, and what these might offer to contemporary ecological debate. Within narratives of experience, he wraps his questions in melancholy and romance.
