It was a daunting task for Elizabeth to choose a course at university until she discovered the MChem with Industrial Experience course at the University of Bradford.
"This seemed like an ideal opportunity to gain a higher qualification in a subject I was interested in, whilst also having the opportunity to gain hands on experience in industry."
During the course of her undergraduate studies, she could choose modules that would mean she could specialise her chemistry knowledge.
Open Day was key
"My decision to study at the University of Bradford was finalised on a visit to the university on an open day where I was greeted by friendly and enthusiastic staff and students."
During her time at Bradford she took modules in a range of chemical fields, including organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. She also took short courses in subjects that were more specific, including thermal analysis and mass spectrometry. All of which combined to give a solid understanding of the basics of chemistry, whilst giving each student the opportunity to branch out and specialise their knowledge.
Valuable placement year
"For me, the most valuable year was my fourth and final year, which was spent on a placement with Orean Personal care, an independent contract manufacturer for cosmetics. This placement has allowed me to apply my chemical knowledge to real situations, whilst also giving me an invaluable insight into the working world. I have had to engage with customers and learn to work in a team consisting of various different departments. All of which provides a great stepping-stone in the transition from university student to professional chemist."
Since completing her degree, she has been offered a full time position at Orean.
"This goes to show that there are real opportunities for graduate employment through this course at the University of Bradford. I would highly recommend it!"
