- Mature student
- Enjoys cycling in the Yorkshire Dales
- Interested in Cancer Biology
My name is Greg Billenness. I am a mature student currently in the second year of my Biomedical Science course. Having been made redundant from my job in an internet sports company I decided on a career change. I wanted to give something back to society and so chose a medical based degree.
I am interested in all things scientific from medicine to astronomy. I like to keep myself fit and in my spare time I am often found cycling around the beautiful dales and villages of West Yorkshire or in the great University gym. I also enjoy golf and chess. I work part-time in the University bike hub where I use my passion for cycling to promote sustainable transport to students and staff.
I chose Biomedical Science because of the strong focus on laboratory experience and broad range of subjects it teaches. As a mature student I wanted a degree that gave me the sort of skills that would allow me to go straight into the workplace. I particularly enjoy the genetics module which includes exciting and cutting-edge topics such as epigenetics and long non-coding RNAs.
I have enjoyed the course immensely and when I graduate I hope to continue my study in my chosen speciality of Cancer Biology either by doing a PhD or working in private industry.
