Dementia Awareness Afternoon

Published:

A dementia awareness afternoon is taking place at the University of Bradford.

The event which takes place on Friday will provide an opportunity to receive information and advice on living with dementia.

The session is being organised by Bradford Nursing Society and is being run in partnership with Care UK.

The afternoon will explore the sensory disturbances that people living with dementia may feel, with a dementia friend’s session, complimentary food and certificate of attendance. With that, there is a chance to find out about the CPD degree courses and modules offered at the University of Bradford.¿

Nivetthy Karunakaran from the Bradford Nursing Society said: “This is a great opportunity for both nursing students and members of the public to receive support and advice on dementia. The afternoon will highlight how people living with dementia may feel and how they can be supported.”

Maizie Mears-Owen, Care UK’s head of dementia said: “I am really looking forward to Friday's event and pleased to be invited to lead the session. I think it is really important for us all to share our knowledge about dementia. Helping to develop people's further understanding of this disease means we can support those living with dementia to live well.

“Everyone who comes along to the session will also be give copies of our 'Listen, Talk, Connect' handbook which helps everyone to communicate just that little bit better with people living with dementia and our 'As Easy as ABC' guide. This lists 100 practical hints and tips for activity based care for carers, relatives of residents and visitors to our homes to help them work with residents to get the most out of each day.”

The Dementia Awareness Afternoon will take place in the Communal Hall in student central at the University on Friday 14 November, 1.30 – 5pm. The event is open for everyone and is free for members of the nursing society or 50p for non-members.

As the number of places are limited please contact Nivetthy Karunakaran (Nursing Society - Events Coordinator) on N.Karunakaran1@student.bradford.ac.uk to confirm attendance.
